In 1613 het die Nederlandse parlement (State-Generaal) Otto van Veen opdrag gegee om twaalf skilderye te skilder wat die opstand van die Bataafse teen die Romeine in 69 en 70 nC uitbeeld. Dit is uitgestal in Binnenhof, die sentrale regeringsgebou in Den Haag. In die vroeë jare van die Nederlandse Republiek het baie hul eie opstand teen Spanje vergelyk met die Bataafse opstand.
